On Tuesday, June 6, 2023, Birthright Israel Foundation held its annual Long Island reception honoring Rebecca and Morty Schaja for their leadership and dedication to Birthright Israel. Amy Jaffee, Chair of the Long Island Leadership Cabinet, opened the program with an important program update regarding the current waitlist and the crucial need for funding. Donor and lay leader Jon Held then spoke about his family’s passion for Birthright Israel and urged those philanthropists in the room to increase their support. He then has the pleasure of introducing the event’s honorees, Rebecca and Morty Schaja. “They jumped right in and for years have paved the way for many successes of the program — even though their own children never participated,” shared Jon Held.

Rebecca and Morty took the stage and showcased their passion for Israel and the trip upon being honored. “The Birthright experience is good for Israel, good for American Jewry, good for Jewish continuity, I could go on and on, but I won’t; Birthright is just plain good,” exclaimed Morty Schaja.

Following the Schaja’s Birthright Israel accessibility, alum Adam Shapiro spoke about this trip for those on the Autism spectrum. Adam shared the importance and gratitude he had for being able to experience the Jewish homeland and form a connection with his Israeli peers. The program’s finale was a keynote speech by pro-Israel activist, influencer, and chair of the Foundation’s Alum Ambassador, Jordyn Tilchen. Jordyn inspired all with her remarks that showcased the power of an immersive experience in Israel.
